OUTING – Paardevlei Trail, Firgrove Rural, Somerset West – Leader: Charles Britz.

May 19 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am

Meet at 08h30.

Update : Charles Britz, a local member of the Somerset West Bird Club has agreed to lead the outing. He reports that the water levels are low, but bush birding is interesting. The outing should last about one and a half hours, thereafter anybody who so wishes can join us at Macassar for extended birding.

This easy 3 km circular trail around the Paardevlei wetland turns up more than its fair share of rarities.
Paardevlei is a large wetland, with extensive marshes and open water. There is lots of bird life on the water and in the reeds, with a good variety of land birds in the trees, shrubs and grasslands apart from the water birds and shorebirds. Almost 200 species have been recorded here.
Bring tea/coffee and snacks to enjoy in the car park after the walk.

Directions: Take the N2 north to Somerset West. Take exit 43 for the R44 (Broadway Boulevard) and turn right into R44. After about 1.6 km, turn right into De Beers Avenue. Drive through the security gate (tell them you are going birding if asked). Drive a little way and park in the visitors parking spots on the right, about 900m along De Beers Ave. Meet at the entrance to the trail.
