OUTING – Tokai Arboretum. Leader: Otto Schmidt.

Updated 19 May 2025:     This Outing is cancelled and an new update will be announced at the end of May 2025.   Meet at 09h00. The Tokai Arboretum was declared a National Monument in 1985, and is home to over 274 tree species. The car park where we meet is usually good for Common Chaffinch, and Cape Siskins should be found near the now abandoned restaurant building. The bush there should also be good for Cape Canary, Swee Waxbill, African Dusky Flycatcher and with luck, other species such as African Paradise Flycatcher and Red-chested Cuckoo. Rondevlei Nature Reserve Perth Rd & Fishermens Walk, Zeekoei Vlei, Cape Town, South Africa

Meet at 08h30.  Please note the winter starting time. These regular monthly outings are for all Rondevlei enthusiasts and beginners are especially welcome. Duration 2 1⁄2 hours, but you can stay as long as you like. Bring a warm anorak even if it is a hot day as it can get cold in the hides. Entrance is free. Entrance is free, but remember to bring your ID, driver’s licence, or passport in order to obtain an entry permit at the gate.

Meet at 08h30. This is one of the best locations for land-based seabird watching on the Peninsula – a good way to get to grips with some pelagic species that are mostly encountered on pelagic trips. Let’s hope for some ‘ideal’ winter gales to drive the seabirds closer to shore. If you have a scope, please bring it along. OUTING – Tygerberg Nature Reserve Leader: Keith Roxburgh.

Tygerberg Nature Reserve 1 Totius Street, Welgemoed, Cape Town, Western Province, South Africa

Meet at 08h30. Tygerberg Nature Reserve is a 309 hectare reserve on the Tygerberg Hills. It supports one of the last remnants of the critically endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld vegetation type and boasts 562 plant species. The reserve has 137 bird species recorded, including Black-winged Kite, Peregrine Falcon, and Barn Owl. The area is hilly and requires a level of fitness. Wear good walking shoes. Meet at 08h30. This reserve near Muizenberg is normally closed on weekends but we have arranged for the club to have access. It includes wetlands, a river system, and an estuary. Directions: From the Main Road in Retreat, turn into Military Road at the Lavender Hill sign and continue over the level crossing. At the first set of traffic lights turn right into Coniston Road.
