This is a voluntary working relationship with the City of Cape Town and the Cape Bird Club since 1978.
It has been raining all week and in parts of Cape Town there has been record amounts recorded for July according to social media. I have recorded 354mm as of this morning at 08h00 as an example.
So we decided to cancel the hack today as it is very wet and cold. If memory serves me right this is the 3rd time I have cancelled in 37 years due to weather conditions.
I took some photos as a record of the conditions there and while doing so looked up when hearing the gulls screeching and mobbing a pair of African Harrier hawks near Thesen’s bridge. There were 3 Greater Flamingo feeding on the sand spit along with Caspian Terns and a lone African Spoonbill, Kelp and Hartlaubs Gulls. The wetland garden alongside the railway line and opposite the sports fields is full of water and a pair of Yellow billed Ducks were paddling about in the water. There are large puddles of water in the picnic area under the trees.
So we will see what the weather brings next month.
See this link for the past reports of what we have done.
