In view of the Corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic and our President’s declaration of a Disaster situation in South Africa, the committee has decided to postpone / cancel for the time being all meetings, outings and other activities planned for the next few weeks until at least after Easter. At that time we will reassess the situation (as schools and businesses will be doing), and be in touch with you again.
This has, in part, been decided as many of our members are part of a vulnerable age group. We also need to heed the call for all to work together to stave off the spread of the virus as much as we can!
Specific Cape Bird Club activities to be postponed or cancelled at this time include:
- Sunday 22 March 2020 – Sunday outing to D’Aria Wine Estate
- Wednesday 1 April – Weekday outing to Two Rivers Urban Park
- Thursday 2 April – Evening meeting: Cruising in the Antarctic winter
- Saturday 4 April – Rondevlei Nature Reserve outing
If you assist with bird counts or hacks, please contact the relevant leader. Many COCT parks and reserves will be closed. The leader, however, will find out / decide whether the count will go ahead.
Meanwhile, please continue to share your birding experiences and photographs on our CBC Facebook page. Please also share bird-related reading matter and information about courses in which some folk might be interested in order to keep busy at home during self-isolation.
There was an article put out by the Audubon Society in the US entitled “Birding is the perfect activity while practicing social distancing”. Take time to read it. https://www.audubon.org/news/birding-perfect-activity-while-practicing-social-distancing
You will be advised what changes will be made to our programme after Easter. Please ensure you are on the mailing list for our e-newsletter so we are able to keep you informed.
If this ‘lockdown’ situation continues for some time, your committee will investigate other means of conducting meetings. In the meantime enjoy birding on your own. Get lots of fresh air, take all the necessary precautions and keep safe!
