Thank you to John and Jane Magner, and Gill Ford, who organised a walk to commemorate the life of Joan Ackroyd, long-time member of the CBC, at Kirstenbosch on Tuesday morning. Joan died on 6th June, aged 89. About 36 people attended the walk which started at Gate 2, near the nursery. We stopped for tea on the stone steps above the Dell, where friends and fellow-birders had a chance to share memories of a stalwart of the club.
Joan participated in the monthly bird counts at Kirstenbosch for about fifteen years or more, so it was appropriate that the walk took place there. Not many birds were seen on this rather chilly morning, but a pair of Spotted Eagle-Owls were enjoyed in a tree close to the steps, opposite “Owl Rock”. The Magners brought a candle and some roses which added a special touch to the occasion.
Thank you to all who helped make the event a very fitting and memorable one.
