About 40 birdwatchers joined us as we made our way on the paved path (keeping our feet dry) towards the mountain.
We stopped at a very productive shrub, with Speckled Mousebirds and a very unusual White-backed Mousebird, also a Southern Fiscal. Just as rewarding was an incredible sighting of a Cape Grassbird that sat in the open, totally disregarding an admiring crowd.
Of the remaining aerial feeders, we saw Large Rock Martins and Black Saw-wings.
We were lucky to see Cape and Forest Canaries as well as Bronze Mannikens and Swee Waxbills.
One of the “rock Owls” thrilled many birders, although it was well camouflaged and not easy to see.
The only raptor seen was a distant Black Sparrowhawk, and we heard Olive Woodpecker and Southern Bou-Bou.
With the demise of the Atlas Cedar it has become more difficult to see African Olive Pigeons, but a sharp-eyed participant saw a few in the distance.
We completed the outing with a species count of 34, quite acceptable for this time of the year.
