BirdLife South Africa is working hard on several fronts to conserve the Endangered African Penguin. Tegan and Christina will share some of their work on this iconic species. They have been tracking African Penguins during the important post-breeding and pre-moult periods since 2012. Tegan will talk about the results of this work shedding light on the movements of African Penguins and how this is being used to advocate for better protection of their foraging areas. Evening Meeting: Using historical data and modern techniques to improve conservation efforts Speaker: Rebecca Muller.

Rebecca is a doctoral student at the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology and her PhD research focuses on utilizing an historical database of nest record cards collected between 1910-1999 to investigate how climate change has affected the annual cycles of birds in southern Africa. In her talk tonight she will look at how historical breeding data collected by citizen scientists in the Cape Peninsula, plus modern data from tracked Crowned Eagles, have contributed to our understanding of breeding ecology.

He will be sharing with us an overview of that trip, where they went, the trials and tribulations of getting around that island nation, and, of course, the many photographs he took of the birds they got to see, many of which are considered the most iconic bird species on the planet.

Members are invited to show 3 to 10 of their best bird photos taken during the CBC-COCT-2023 Birding Big Year Challenge and to tell the story behind them. They may be stand-alone photos or a series of photos telling one story. The story – lasting no more than 6 minutes – may be that the photograph illustrates specific characteristics of the bird or its behaviour, or it may describe the circumstances in which you took the photo(s). Dr Dieter Oschadleus trained as a bird ringer while studying at UCT. After an interlude of working in Pretoria, Dieter took up the post of Bird Ringing Coordinator at SAFRING to coordinate ringing in South Africa, a post he held for 20 years. In this talk, Ian Glenn will get to the bottom of some common errors and misconceptions and try to persuade the listeners, in an interactive quiz, of their ignorance of Levaillant’s contribution to nomenclature! Ian Glenn is Emeritus Professor of Media Studies at the University of Cape Town and Research Fellow in Communications Sciences at the University of the Free State, and has authored several books on François Levaillant and wildlife.

Don’t miss your club’s AGM! Mike Buckham will present the Chairman’s report and other AGM matters, and Joy Fish will present the Club’s financial statements. Our Chairman has a passion for endemic birds, and following the business of the meeting, he will talk about some of his memorable moments trying to see all of them. Mike will also give a few pointers as to where some of the best places are to find the trickier ones. It will be a journey through some of South Africa's most beautiful places in search of some of our most treasured birds.

This presentation combines John’s passion for both Ancient Egypt and birding. The Ancient Egyptians used 73 birds in their very picturesque hieroglyphic writings, and we will see how they used them to communicate and to convey the history of Ancient Egypt especially on their temples, tombs and elsewhere. The Ancient Egyptian civilisation spanned a period of more than 3000 years during which more than 450 pharaohs ruled during 31 dynasties.
