Meet at 07h30.
The Moravian church in Mamre is South Africa’s fifth oldest church and was completed in 1818 and
was declared a National Monument in 1967. We will do some farmland birding and also spend some
time on the church grounds. An early start gives us the advantage of beating the heat and seeing
some of the birds before they retreat for the day. Some migrants, such as Spotted Flycatcher and
Willow Warbler might still be around, and other possible birds include Greater and Lesser Honeyguide,
Olive and Cardinal Woodpecker, African Hoopoe, and maybe even a Brown Snake Eagle. Farmland
birding in the surrounding back roads might yield Cape Clapper Lark, Southern Black Korhaan, Grey Tit,
and Namaqua Dove among others. Bring tea/coffee and snacks.
Directions: Take the N7 north towards Philadelphia Road. Take the R304 exit from N7. Continue
on the R304 to Atlantis for about 16 km. Turn right onto Dassenberg Road (R307) and continue for 7
km, then turn left onto Main Road and continue to the church. We will meet in the church parking
area. (Address: 8 Church Street, Mamre; GPS coordinates: 33.5061° S, 18.4711° E)
