OUTING − Two Rivers Urban Park. Leader: Otto Schmidt.
February 7 @ 7:00 am - 11:00 am
Meet at 07h00. We will start birding along the Liesbeek River opposite Hartleyvale Stadium, including the temporary wetlands which hopefully will be full at this time of the year. We should see Giant, Pied and Malachite Kingfishers, perhaps Black Duck. There may even be a Grey-headed Gull amongst all the Hartlaub’s Gulls. We shall then visit the bird hide in the grounds of the SA Astronomical Observatory which overlooks a temporary wetland at the junction of the Black and Liesbeek Rivers where interesting species such as Little Bittern, Purple Heron, Greater Flamingo, and
Hottentot Teal have been seen. If time and weather allow, and for the slightly more adventurous, a second bird hide can be visited at the confluence of the two rivers via the River Club. Alternatively we can have tea at the Observatory hide before heading home.
Directions: From Liesbeek Parkway, heading towards the City, turn right at the Station Road / Observatory Road traffic lights. Hartleyvale Stadium is on your left. Cross the bridge over the river, then turn right again towards the Wild Fig Restaurant and continue towards the end of the road. Park just below the restaurant
