Hacking Team at Zandvlei Nature Reserve – April 2009.

This is a working relationship with the City of Cape Town and the Zandvlei Trust.

The day was sunny with a cool SE wind on Easter Saturday and we cut down shrubs screening hideaway areas. Many of the blombos and bitou shrubs have become senescent and largely overgrown. These shrubs create convenient hide away screens for the “unsociable elements” of society. The large shrubs also form a shade canopy preventing ground cover plants and bulbs to grow. Ideally the area should burn to stimulate the new growth, which the fynbos requires to regenerate. Declan Ross cleared away a number of shrubs.
The Chasmanthe’s – Cobra Lily (bulbs) are showing signs of new seasonal growth in this cleared space.
