MINUTES OF THE CAPE BIRD CLUB CONSERVATION COMMITTEE

Minutes of the meeting held on Mon 09 March 2009.

Present: Dave Whitelaw, Gavin Lawson, Felicity Ellmore, Isabella Hayden, Frank Wygold, Doug Harebottle, Cliff Dorse, Suretha Dorse.

1. Strandfontein – Dave and Joanne met with Onno, they might be able to fund some projects.

  • Security - the council wants to put a tower at the weir from Zeekoevlei with infrared cameras, lights etc.
  • Dave and Cliff have been working on a management plan. Michael Toll is working on a management plan for the sludge piles
  • Dave met with Graeme Cumming’s student about monitoring nutrient levels
  • Dave will contact Joanne about plans for the islands

2. Paarden Eiland – Frank had a meeting to revive the Friends of Paarden Eiland.
Now the chairman wants to resign.

  • Frank got his money from Total. He still has some WESSA money left over to use to clear the paths.
  • Frank has been to schools in the area to get them to adopt areas - been to Woodbridge Island Junior school and Buren High. Will also go to Ysterplaat primary. He has also spoke to the Apostolic church – they will also look after an area.
  • The business manager fro the dept of Public works is coming to discuss rent with Frank – the rent they want is unrealistic.
  • Bayview soccer club – the council is going to cancel all previous agreements and start again. They will have a meeting to find someone to take over the lease.
  • Frank wants to kill Typha with salt water (pump from the sea). Cliff thinks its a good idea – will speak to Koos Retief.

3. Raapenberg – Nothing to report – waiting for the lease for the River Club to get sorted.

4. Edith Stephens – Doug contacted Stacy – she is putting together a program for the Bird Club. Doug will ask her if she got Dave’s email about other program.

5. Flaminkvlei – Need to contact Minister Pierre Uys – Suretha will find out how to lodge a ministerial complaint. The Cape Bird Club Cons Com should first send an email to Keith Harrison, raising issues that are a problem , then send it on to the minister.

6. Bantams Klip - They are not meant to be building a power station but they want to build power lines from Bantams Klip to Worcester. Dave is going to a meeting at Pearly Beach about the power lines.

7. House Crow – Louise Stafford has been negotiating with someone in Pretoria to import the starlicide. Dirk van Driel says that she should contact Elsenberg – they will organise it for her.

8. Dassenberg Development – The final EIA will soon be available for comment. We are registered as an I & AP. Joy has been away – Suretha will contact her.

9.Wind farms – the bird aspect is being ignored. There are guidelines but Eskom is ignoring them.

10 Koeberg – the building of a 42ha training/conference facility has been approved by DEAT. They ignored the Botanical report. It will be between Duinefontein and the access rd. There is an appeal process.
