The Cape Bird Club

MINUTES OF THE CAPE BIRD CLUB CONSERVATION COMMITTEE

Minutes of the meeting held on Monday 12 April 2010 at Dave’s house.

Present: Dave Whitelaw, Felicity Ellmore, Gavin Lawson, Doug Harebottle, Shaun Overmeyer.
Apologies: Cliff Dorse, Suretha Dorse, Frank Wygold.

1. Strandfontein - Victoria still hasn’t sent reports to Gavin for the webite. Dave will talk to Asief and ask him to tell her to do it. She just needs to copy the report she sends to Asief to Gavin.

  • Info centre - work is progressing
  • Hyacinth - started draining S3 but the sewage works needed the pan. As soon as the rainy season is over they will dry out the pan.
  • The bequestees and Vernon are having a meeting on Wednesday. They need to find additional funding as the City Council is not going to contribute any more.
  • Dave will be seeing Res Altweg about research at Strandfontein.
  • Shaun has a photo of a fire helicopter filling up its bucket at Strandfontein. They should be using Zeekoevlei. Dave will be taking it further.

2. Paarden Eiland - Gavin has tried to get hold of Dave Privett to find out more about the scout hall.

  • The Friends of Paarden Eiland had a meeting about the scout hall - seems like Frank will be able to use it.
  • Dave will contact Bernadette le Roux
  • What about the money Frank spent fixing up the place he is using?

3. Raapenberg - Shaun will try and get to some of the TRUP meetings

  • Development at Oude Molen – need to suggest a compromise - some houses, some open space. The main building is older than 60 years old so it can’t be flattened. They will need to sort out the land claims before any decision can be made

4. Edith Stephens - Dave and Doug will arrange to meet with Stacy when she gets back from leave. Dave will contact her.

  • Birdlife needs to come on board. When the Stacy talk to the community she could point out the benefits of being a bird guide. Doug will speak to Martin about training birdguides.

5. De Plaat - Doug got a revise EIA - it is on the website. There is a meeting on 28 April 2010. Province have created a management plan for the Lower Berg River Estuary. There is now a setback line at 100m. This meant they had to revise the EIA.

6. Flaminkvlei - Nothing to report.

7. House Crow - nothing new.

8. Penguins - Dave will contact Rob Crawford.

9. Phillippi - Nothing to report.

10. Princessvlei - Nothing to report.

11. Air Estate - There is a group of people opposing the development - they contacted Dave. Dave suggested that if they want to we can come and look at the area and give them ideas how to oppose the development looking at birds.

  • Shaun will try and find out exactly where it is.

12. Windfarms - There needs to be more studies - A lot depends on the area. Langebaanweg must have radar - it could be used to study the flightpaths of the birds. Doug will contact them.

  • Dave will contact Mark Anderson - suggest we get a working group together.

13. Winelands - the prospecting is not likely to happen now.

NEXT MEETING - 19h30 on Monday 7 June 2010, at Dave’s house.
