The Cape Bird Club Koeberg Nature Reserve – 15 May 2005. |
|
About 30 people attended the club outing to Koeberg Nature Reserve, about 30 kms north west of Cape Town lead by Mel Tripp. The birds were generally quiet and not too active, although the weather was quite pleasant after the cold front earlier in the week.
Pen Lloyd and his helpers were busy ringing birds, when the "birders" arrived. A short demonstration with explanation was given to all those interested.
A close up of a bemused Redfaced Mousebird before its release. A visit to Penn Lloyd's ringing station gave the opportunity to see several species close-up, in the hand, and admire the subtle blues and purple in the seemingly brown plumage of a Red-faced Mousebird.
Somewhat surprisingly a single European Swallow in full breeding plumage was seen foraging and feeding over sandy scrub, just off the beach, with Rock Martins.
Some of the group having a rest with tea or lunch with Mel in the background tallying up the species count.
