"Save the Flamingo" fund raising event –  25 August 2009.

On 25 August a joint venture between the Tygerberg Bird Club and the Cape Bird Club provided a venue and celebration for Mark Anderson's fund-raising presentation.

Mark delivering his 79th lecture on "Save the Flamingos".

Mark is also CEO of BirdLifeSA and we were particularly pleased to welcome him as head of the umbrella body of which we are a branch. Mark has gained international acclaim for his work on the conservation of Lesser Flamingos on Kamfers Dam near Kimberley. At the presentation he explained how the island had been build and funded, as well as the legal wrangle over his work. The hi-light of the presentation was the "close-up and personal" video of adults Lesser Flamingos tending their chicks. Much of this footage depicted details that have never been captured before.

The evening's activities included a lucky ticket draw, performed by Mark, for a "Leatherman multi-tool" valued at R1600-00.  The amount raised was R7000-00 and we are grateful to all the generous folk who attended.
