Introduction

Who are the Juniors? They are any children who are becoming interested in birds, whether they are members or not. All are welcome. Special worksheets are available on request for those who wish to advance their birding skills at home.

We have one outing per month - on the first Sunday of each month. (Put it in your diary!)
Binoculars are essential equipment! Please bring something for the tea break, but note that we do not snack on the path - only during our tea time!)

Because parents have to provide transport, they are encouraged to come along with their children, but it is also fine to drop them off and fetch them at the appointed time.

All outings last for 1½ hours unless otherwise stated. Booking is essential - at least 24 hours ahead.

Directions:
Take the M5 and exit at the Ottery turn-off. Continue down Ottery Road past the Hypermarket. At the junction with Strandfontein Road (N17), turn right.
Continue 4,2 km down the N17 to the beginning of a blue-gum avenue. Look for the Zeekoevlei sign and turn right. Continue along this road as far as it goes - no matter how it twists and turns. (You will pass the Peninsula Aquatic Club on your right.)
When you come to a building with a mural, marked Environmental Centre, you have arrived. We meet in the parking area in front of the mural.

01 April (Sun) 09h00  Paarl Bird Sanctuary.

Directions:
Find your way to Paarl. From the N1 off-ramp, travel along Paarl Main Road. Turn right at the second traffic lights, into Berg River Boulevard. Follow this road as it twists and turns along the river - through traffic circles - past the hospital - until you reach a T-junction at a traffic light. Turn right at the T-junction. Continue over 2 bridges - the river and the railway line. Almost immediately you will see Drommedarisstraat. Turn left. Continue until you reach the end of the industrial area. Turn left over the railway line at the level crossing. Follow the road left to the gate. We meet at the parking area just inside the gate.

02 May (Sun) 10h30   Eagle Encounters.

This place offers incredible learning opportunities and close-up encounters with raptors in their rehabilitation programme. Our entrance fees are all they have to finance their work. They are not part of Spier. Spier simply provides them with a venue. The raptors are different for every visit as some have been released and new ones have been brought in.

Ticket prices can be found on the website. We will attend the 11h00 display. The Juniors will walk around at 10.30 with some instruction and then watch the display at 11.00.

Directions:
Take the N2 out of Cape Town. At the Baden-Powell Drive off-ramp, turn left towards Stellenbosch on the R310. Approximately 6 km from here you will see Spier Estate on the right. Enter the estate and turn left. Look out for the Eagle Encounters sign. We meet inside - just beyond the pay point.
