The Cape Bird Club

Toyota Big Birding Day with the Cape Flats Bird Club

 on 04 December 2010.

Starting at 6.30 on Saturday 4th December, 10 members of the CBC met Stacy Michaels, the Education Officer at Edith Stevens Nature Reserve, as well as the staff of Toyota branches - McCarthy Toyota Tableview, Barloworld Toyota Tygervalley,  Market Toyota Athlone and staged a successful Big Birding Day with the aspirant birders of the Cape Flats Bird Club.

After coffee and rusks, we set off with 15 aspirant birders, 12 of whom were actively involved in the City of Cape Town's “Learnership Programme”. The other 3 were members of the Philippi Wetland Forum.

The Edith Stevens Reserve, the Philippi Wetlands and Rondevlei Nature Reserve were explored for bird life. Emphasis was on bird ID rather than number of birds seen. We were fortunate that the birds were co-operative and a good number of species were seen.
Our new birders showed a lot of enthusiasm, which was obvious from their reaction, as well as their spontaneous requests for further sessions.

We were very well catered for by the Toyota Dealers who also supplied, breakfast packs for all at Rondevlei and a delicious spread of salads and a spitbraai to end off the days outing.

The Edith Stevens staff presented all the birders and drivers with an indigenous plant as a memento, as well as a prize to the group who spotted the most unusual bird.

We look forward to further sessions and helping to grow the enthusiasm and knowledge of this group.
