The trips I do are quality low cost, for people who would not travel there on their own and would like to experience some of these places, but again unaffordable on an individual basis.
Here is a brief summary of the trip I am offering which includes Accommodation, Dinner and breakfasts, Transport and local guides where possible. Snacks, lunches and booze are for your own account.
This is a 8 night trip from the 14th to 23rd of July 2018.
Leave at 5:00am on 14th July and return on the 23rd of July back in Cape Town
New Holme Karoo/Gariep Nature Reserve – 3 night special package consisting of:
Guided by the owner.
Arrive in time for a sundowner drive to the hippo pool followed by a 3 course dinner (owner’s wife won the 2017 queen of the kitchen cooking competition).
A early morning birding drive, breakfast, open time in the gardens and then in the afternoon a walk to the Khoi etchings and on the way back stop at Karoo Koppie for a sundowner again, dinner at the lodge, the next day a morning birding drive, breakfast, open time again and leave for a early evening braai at the dam to see the blue cranes come in for roosting, come back home after sunset with a spotlight (night drive), you leave the next morning – so 3 night and 2 days packed with birding and activities.
Burchell’s Courser, Blue Korhaan, Karoo Korhaan, Blue Crane and Ludwig’s Bustard are amongst the 205 birds species which have been recorded here. Will send a comprehensive bird list for the farm later.
They have the only hippos in the Northern Cape and have reintroduced them after they had been shot out 230 years ago.
On the night drives it will be possible to see nightjars, courser, also Aardvark, Aardwolf, Wild cat and possibly the Black-footed cat.
Spring Hare and Cape Hare should also be on the cards.
Leaving New Holme we travel up the N1 to Springfontein and Garingboom via the Gariep Dam and Oviston Reserve, time allowing.
Two nights with wonderful Karoo boere kos, an informative day drive on the farm with Riette Griessel giving you the low down on the diverse species of larks, pipits and cisticolas, quailfinch and francolins, possible again to see the likes of Ludwigs and Kori Bustard amongst other visitors to the farm. Wrynecks nest in the garden.
Leaving Garingboom we move further north travelling through Free State grasslands again looking for Blue Korhaan and widow birds arriving at Mokala National Park and Lilydale Camp for two nights where we self cater. We then head South through the Park to Mosu Lodge for our final night in the Park. The south side of the Park is good for Red-crested Korhaan (Bustard) and Northern Black Korhaan.
We return to Beaufort West to Olive Grove Guest Farm for an overnight stop over and spend an afternoon in the Karoo National Park, or depending on the group we do an early afternoon walk on the farm before departing back to Cape Town the following morning.
